It is with great sadness that the Sawiris family announces the passing of Mr. Onsi Sawiris. He died in El Gouna, Egypt at the age of 90. Born in 1930, was a renowned Egyptian serial entrepreneur and philanthropist. Mr. Sawiris founded his first construction company in Egypt at the age of 20. The company was nationalized in 1961 and he later traveled to Libya to relaunch his business. Mr. Sawiris returned to Egypt in 1976 and founded Orascom. Alongside his sons, he ventured in building materials, heavy industry, real estate, telecommunication, and technology. Today, these companies have over 120,000 employees globally. In 2001, Mr. Sawiris and his wife, Yousriya, established the Sawiris Foundation for Social Development. The Foundation works in cooperation with civil society, private sector, and governmental agencies to implement sustainable solutions to alleviate poverty and social and economic exclusion in Egypt. The Onsi Sawiris Scholarship program was also established to sponsor the edu
